A few weeks before the European Commission presents its single market strategy (see EUROPE 13633/4), the European Parliament set out its grievances in a resolution adopted on Thursday 8 May by 306 votes in favour, 80 against and 57 abstentions. It calls on the European Commission and the EU Council to “increase their efforts” to remove the remaining and “unjustified” obstacles to the free movement of goods and services in the internal market. A whole list of recommendations follows.
For example, the rules on recognising professional qualifications need to be applied more rigorously to ensure the free movement of people, according to MEPs.
They also insist on the rigorous application of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA) and “urge the Commission to conclude its ongoing investigations in the framework of [these regulations]”.
For trade in goods, the European Parliament stresses the importance of implementing the digital product passport.
According to a provisional version of the document (see EUROPE 13633/4), these recommendations should be included in the single market strategy, which the Commission will present on 21 May.
The issue of foreign parcels under €150, which are flooding the European market, is also the subject of recommendations: the market surveillance framework should be strengthened and the Consumer Protection Cooperation Regulation revised, according to MEPs.
Member States should also allocate sufficient technical, human and financial resources to market surveillance, stresses Parliament.
