The Presidents of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the European Council, António Costa, and the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised to continue their “work towards peace in Europe, the very essence of the Schuman declaration”, on Friday 9 May, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of this declaration by the former French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, in favour of the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community, considered to be the starting point for European reconciliation and construction.
Meeting in Luxembourg, Mr Schuman’s birthplace, the three leaders reaffirmed their “deep commitment to a European project that unites our peoples, as well as to enlargement as the European Union’s best geopolitical investment”. They intend to redouble their efforts to guarantee “economic prosperity”, pursue “social progress” and strengthen the security and strategic autonomy of the European continent.
“We are determined to uphold a rules-based international order, to strengthen multilateralism and to act as a reliable global partner”, they added.
