09/05/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 9 May, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had proposed that the Allies devote at least 5% of their GDP to defence and security within seven years. According to Mr Schoof, Mr Rutte expects that at the NATO summit in The Hague at the end of June, the target to be reached by 2032 “will be 3.5% military spending” and “1.5% related spending, such as infrastructure or cyber security”. Some countries, such as Spain, would like certain security-related expenditure to be included in NATO’s accounts. Mr Rutte has mentioned publicly on several occasions that defence spending should reach at least 3%. US President Donald Trump, for his part, has called for 5%. By 2024, 22 Allies had reached the target of spending 2% of their GDP on defence (see EUROPE 13629/15). (CG)
