First EU rules to limit consumption of electrical products in ‘standby’ mode come into force

The new revised EU ecodesign rules on energy consumption limits for electrical appliances in ‘standby’, ‘off’ and ‘network standby’ modes have been in force since 9 May 2025.

These rules, adopted in April 2023, reflect recent technological advances and include products such as Wi-Fi routers, wireless speakers and, for the first time, motorised furniture and building components such as desks and motorised blinds.

According to the European Commission, these measures should save 4 TWh of electricity per year by 2030 and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.4 million tonnes.

We will be saving enough energy to power more than 1 million electric cars by 2030”, stressed European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen in a press release.

The Commission also points out that consumers could save €530 million a year in energy costs by 2030. The rules also provide for clearer information on standby power consumption, with implementation phased in over four years.
