The new revised EU ecodesign rules on energy consumption limits for electrical appliances in ‘standby’, ‘off’ and ‘network standby’ modes have been in force since 9 May 2025.
These rules, adopted in April 2023, reflect recent technological advances and include products such as Wi-Fi routers, wireless speakers and, for the first time, motorised furniture and building components such as desks and motorised blinds.
According to the European Commission, these measures should save 4 TWh of electricity per year by 2030 and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.4 million tonnes.
“We will be saving enough energy to power more than 1 million electric cars by 2030”, stressed European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen in a press release.
The Commission also points out that consumers could save €530 million a year in energy costs by 2030. The rules also provide for clearer information on standby power consumption, with implementation phased in over four years.
