On the evening of Thursday 24 April, European External Action Service spokeswoman Anitta Hipper welcomed the agreement between the DRC and the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC)/M23 to work towards a ceasefire and constructive dialogue. The day before, in a joint statement, the Congolese government and the M23 group, which is conducting negotiations, had announced that they wanted to “work towards the conclusion of a truce”. “We urge the parties to redouble their efforts and stress the urgency of establishing a lasting peace”, the spokeswoman emphasised. Welcoming Qatar’s facilitation of the discussions, she reiterated the EU’s support for the East African Community and Southern African Development Community process. (CG)
