EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Cameroon

MEPs vote on resolution to counter media repression in run-up to presidential election

Voting by a show of hands on Thursday 3 April, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the systematic repression of journalists in Cameroon.

In the run-up to the 2025 presidential election, MEPs are concerned about attacks on press freedom in the country and are calling for tangible measures to protect media professionals.

The text, which urges authorities to release journalists Amadou Vamoulké, Kingsley Fomunyuy Njoka, Mancho Bibixy, Thomas Awah Junior and Tsi Conrad “immediately and unconditionally” and to guarantee “that their basic rights are upheld” and that they have access to medical care, also calls on the EU and Member States “to raise cases of detained journalists with the Cameroonian authorities“.

The resolution recommends using their “diplomatic and economic leverage” to advance human rights.

Parliament also calls on the European Commission, the European External Action Service and diplomatic representations to ensure “comprehensive observation of trials”, to visit detained journalists and to “maintain contact with marginalised or at-risk journalists” and their families. Finally, it demands an end to military trials of civilians, support for a UN mission and the issuing of humanitarian visas.
