Brussels, 03/04/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 3 April, the European Parliament demanded that Alexander Lukashenka’s regime immediately cease its repression, which is now also targeting Belarusians abroad, and that it release all political prisoners. In the resolution adopted (535 votes in favour, 19 against and 55 abstentions), MEPs call for EU-wide legal support and protection for exiled Belarusians. Calling for new sanctions equivalent to those imposed on Russia, they advocate the rapid development and implementation of a legal mechanism to freeze and confiscate the assets and property belonging to Lukashenka and his associates abroad, to be reallocated to support the victims of the repression. Parliament is also asking Europeans to increase their support for independent media, human rights defenders, trade unions and civil society initiatives.
