Condemning the Iranian Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the death sentences against activists Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, “detained under inhumane conditions and subjected to unfair trials”, the European Parliament, on Thursday 3 April, called for their release and that of all prisoners currently on death row for political activism in Iran.
In the resolution they adopted, MEPs condemn the “unprecedented rise in executions” and the systematic targeting of human rights activists and minorities. They call for the immediate and unconditional release of individuals detained on account of their religion or beliefs.
At least 975 people were executed in Iran in 2024, the highest number in more than 20 years.
The European Parliament also calls for the immediate release and repatriation of condemned EU nationals and for all charges against them to be dropped.
In the Parliament’s view, the Council and the Member States should make the improvement of relations with Iran conditional on the abolition of the death penalty and the release of political prisoners and EU nationals.
