E-mobility, recharging and electricity sectors call on European Commission not to postpone CO2 limits

The European electric mobility, recharging and electricity sectors, in partnership with civil society, have called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to reject the proposal to phase in the 2025 CO2 limits, in a letter made public on Friday 21 February. They fear that this will “effectively delay their ambition” (see EUROPE 13559/32).

They are also calling for the rejection of multi-year averaging to ensure that the 2025 CO2 limits remain meaningful and that the transition to electric vehicles is not delayed. “In an unlikely case that carmakers will need to pay fines incurred through the CO2 limits, any deductions of member states contributions to the EU budget resulting from the fines should be allocated to the electric vehicle ecosystem”, they suggested. They do not want the 2025 CO2 regulation to be reopened.

In their view, flexibilities that push back the 2025 target will also: - delay the adoption of battery electric cars by consumers; - penalise companies that have invested in compliance; - open the door to potential attacks on the 2030 and 2035 CO2 limits in coming years.
