21/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – In March, the European Commission will publish a proposal to extend, beyond 2025, the regulation governing the filling of gas into storage facilities, imposing a fill rate of 90% by November, with intermediate targets in February, May, July and September (see EUROPE 13535/5). The Commission wants to extend the measure, but “taking into account the various concerns of the Member States”, explained the European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen, on Thursday 20 February (see EUROPE 13584/9). The intention is to introduce more flexible targets to prevent fixed filling dates being used by traders for speculative purposes. During a debate in Parliament’s Committee on Industry (ITRE), the Polish Presidency of the EU Council also indicated that it was “absolutely necessary” to revise the regulation on gas storage, and hoped that the dossier would be finalised in June.
