T&E and European shipping and aviation industries call for urgent action to accelerate production of clean fuels

On Thursday 13 February, the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), the airline trade association Airlines for Europe (A4E) and the NGO network Transport & Environment (T&E) called on the European Commission and EU Member States to speed up the production of clean fuels for maritime and air transport.

They propose that the future ‘Clean Industrial Deal’ should “prioritise scalable renewable fuels for shipping and aviation”. In their view, the ‘Sustainable Transport Investment Plan’ “should ramp up the production in the EU of at least 40% of the fuels needed” under the ‘FuelEU Maritime’ regulation on the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in maritime transport (see EUROPE 13551/25) and the ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’ regulation on the deployment of SAF in aviation (see EUROPE 13422/8).

The three organisations are also advocating the use of European and national revenues from the Emissions Trading System (ETS) to reduce project risks, and the development of a matchmaking platform to facilitate access to clean fuels for shipping and aviation.
