06/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – The ‘FuelEU Maritime’ regulation on the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in maritime transport has been fully applicable since Wednesday 1 January 2025. It sets targets for reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used on ships operating in the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA). It promotes the use of cleaner fuels and energy and supports the decarbonisation of the maritime transport sector by setting maximum limits on the annual greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used by a ship. These limits will become more ambitious over time, rising from a 2% reduction in 2025 to 80% by 2050. In July, the European Commission published a document to answer the key questions concerning the implementation of the regulation (see EUROPE 13459/43). (AD)
