13/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – The European Investment Bank (EIB Global) and the European Union’s delegation in the Pacific have signed a €2.5 million contribution agreement to assess the feasibility of building and operating a multipurpose seaport and wave breaker on the island of Kiritimati (Christmas) in Kiribati, in the Pacific Ocean. The EIB Global package will provide technical assistance to assess the technical, environmental and social viability of the project. Once the study is completed, the bank, alongside its development partners, will examine the possibility of financing it. The initiative is part of the EU’s ‘Global Gateway’ strategy for connectivity between Europe and other regions of the world and aims to strengthen Kiribati’s role as a strategic commercial centre.
