31/01/25 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 29 January, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published an opinion assessing the mutations in avian influenza viruses and their potential to spread to humans (see EUROPE 13446/22). The work of the two agencies draws on a wide range of data, including genetic analyses, case studies in humans and the presence of antibodies, to describe current risks and risk reduction strategies. The experts drew up an exhaustive list of mutations, from which they identified 34 genetic mutations likely to increase the potential for avian flu viruses to spread to humans.
