The European Union has approved a new €45 million grant for Laos for 2025-2027 as part of its Global Gateway programme, paving the way for its support for the country’s tenth national socio-economic development plan.
Announced by EU Ambassador Mark Gallagher at a meeting with Laos’ Minister of Planning and Investment, Phet Phomphiphak, the funding builds on the EU’s previous commitment of around €600 million under the Team Europe strategy for Laos (2021-2025) to support the country’s ninth national development plan, with a focus on a green and inclusive economy, human capital and good governance.
This support is also in the context of the planned graduation of Laos from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.
“Through Global Gateway, we are bridging the investment gap, supporting economic recovery, and advancing the green and digital transitions. Despite global challenges, from geopolitical tensions to the climate crisis, the EU remains a strong and reliable partner, committed to long-term cooperation with Lao PDR and the wider region”, said Mr Gallagher.
