In a post published on LinkedIn on Tuesday 21 January, Kai Zenner, the parliamentary assistant to Axel Voss (EPP, German), the MEP who is the text’s rapporteur, details the draft timetable for the AI Liability Directive.
A first version of the text is scheduled for 4 June, after two consultation periods, the first of which will open on 3 February, for six weeks. The deadline for tabling amendments is July, and a final consultation will take place in October.
One of the priorities of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU was to continue work on this directive, which had been put on hold for a time during the Hungarian Presidency of the Council.
The vote in the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI), then in plenary, is not expected to take place before the early months of 2026.
This directive aims to incorporate a liability system for civil damages created by AI systems. It goes hand in hand with the amendments to the directive on liability for defective products (see EUROPE 13314/5) but fills in its gaps on the specific risks of AI.
