22/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – The representative of the steel sector in the EU, Eurofer, is calling on the co-legislators not to postpone the full implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) scheduled for 2026, but rather to adapt its framework. In a statement published on Wednesday 22 January, the organisation expressed concern about the current form of the text, which could harm the sector. For example, it calls for potential circumventions of the CBAM to be dealt with. With this in mind, the steel industry believes that the CBAM should be extended to downstream carbon-intensive sectors, not just up the value chain. A review of the text is planned for this year to examine the possibility of extending its scope. Eurofer is calling for neither this stage nor the introduction of CBAM certificates, scheduled for 2026, to be delayed, contrary to what the EPP has suggested (see EUROPE 13561/19). (LM)
