The EPP, ECR and Renew Europe groups in the European Parliament are calling for EU sanctions to be extended “to Nicolás Maduro, his inner circle and their families”, including President of the National Assembly Jorge Rodríguez and Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López, in a joint motion for a resolution to be put to the vote of MEPs on Thursday 23 January in Strasbourg.
According to the three political groups, sanctions should also be imposed on “all those responsible for violations of human rights, the illegitimate assertion of authority, the usurpation of official functions and all repressive acts in Venezuela”.
At the beginning of January, the EU sanctioned a further fifteen dignitaries of the Venezuelan regime, in response to Nicolás Maduro’s inauguration for a new presidential term which it considers illegitimate (see EUROPE 13555/11).
The EPP, ECR and Renew Europe groups condemn “the usurpation” of the Venezuelan presidency by Nicolás Maduro and point out that the European Parliament has recognised Edmundo González Urrutia as “the legitimate winner of the presidential elections” (see EUROPE 13486/8).
In their resolution, the three groups deplore the recent decision by the Venezuelan authorities to “substantially” reduce the diplomatic staff of several Member States accredited in Caracas.
