European citizens are very sceptical about electric vehicles, according to a survey

Only one in three European citizens (34%) think that electric cars are less polluting than combustion-powered cars when all aspects of production, use and disposal are taken into account, according to a survey published on Tuesday 21 January.

Conducted by Polling Europe at the request of the ECR group in the European Parliament, this survey reveals that respondents are very sceptical about electric vehicles. Of the 5,000 citizens surveyed in the 27 EU Member States, 30% think that there is no difference between combustion and electric vehicles, and 27% think that the emissions of electric vehicles are even higher. 9% don’t know.

Furthermore, 37% of those questioned believe that it is EU policies that have put European manufacturers in a difficult position. 29% blame unfair competition from China. A significant proportion of respondents blame manufacturers themselves, accusing them of making poor decisions (24%), applying inappropriate pricing policies (25%) and lagging behind in terms of technological innovation (22%).
