At the Agriculture Council meeting on Monday 27 January, the agriculture ministers of 17 EU countries will be calling for measures to simplify the rules on organic farming and reduce the administrative burden.
Germany, supported by 16 other countries (including Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Romania and Slovakia), explains in a note ahead of Monday’s ministerial meeting that in 2024 Member States and stakeholders have proposed recommendations for streamlining organic legislation, “with a view to simplification and cost reduction”. Many of the recommendations contained in the final report could ease the burden on businesses. These recommendations include: examining the need for specific rules, clarifying ambiguous regulations, reducing double checks and the documentation effort for organic farms.
The Commission is asked to provide an action plan on how it intends to follow up the report and to pave the way for initiatives to simplify the legislation on organic farming.
