Six EU countries take initiative to boost bioeconomy

Six EU Member States - Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Sweden - presented their positions on how to stimulate the bioeconomy as a sector of activity contributing to reducing Europe’s dependence on fossil raw materials.

According to these countries, the drafting of a ‘European Biotech Act’, following a rigorous impact study, could prove “instrumental” in providing legal certainty and predictability for this economy based on the engineering of renewable resources. This act could be based on the existing framework of ‘Joint Undertakings’ in the field of research and development (see EUROPE 13523/12).

The six Member States are also in favour of adopting a common definition of the bioeconomy at European level, which could facilitate the coordination of Member States’ actions and strengthen sectoral coherence.

The creation of an ‘Sustainable European Bio-based Products Alliance’ is also being promoted, with the aim of supporting demand for these products, facilitating the marketing and ‘scaling up’ of innovations, and encouraging unique investments.
