On Tuesday 29 October, the European Innovation Council (EIC) adopted its work programme for 2025, validated by the European Commission.
More than €1.4 billion will be earmarked for “European research in ‘deep tech’” and “high potential start-ups”. This represents an increase of €200 million over the previous year.
The EIC’s research and funding programme is divided into four main funding schemes:
‘EIC Pathfinder’ for multidisciplinary research teams to support technological innovation;
‘EIC Transition’ to transform research results into innovation opportunities;
‘EIC Accelerator’ for start-ups and SMEs to develop and scale up innovations likely to create new markets or change existing ones;
Finally, the new ‘STEP Scale up’ programme, with a budget of €300 million (expected to increase to €900 million in 2027), will enable greater investment in companies aimed at introducing strategic technologies to the EU market and avoiding strategic dependencies.
