European Innovation Council adopts its 2025 work programme, focusing on ‘deep tech

On Tuesday 29 October, the European Innovation Council (EIC) adopted its work programme for 2025, validated by the European Commission.

More than €1.4 billion will be earmarked for “European research in ‘deep tech’” and “high potential start-ups”. This represents an increase of €200 million over the previous year.

The EIC’s research and funding programme is divided into four main funding schemes:

EIC Pathfinder’ for multidisciplinary research teams to support technological innovation;

EIC Transition’ to transform research results into innovation opportunities;

EIC Accelerator’ for start-ups and SMEs to develop and scale up innovations likely to create new markets or change existing ones;

Finally, the new ‘STEP Scale up’ programme, with a budget of €300 million (expected to increase to €900 million in 2027), will enable greater investment in companies aimed at introducing strategic technologies to the EU market and avoiding strategic dependencies.
