29/10/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 29 October, the European Union activated its civil protection mechanism to help Greece fight an underground forest fire on Mount Pangaea. “Serbia is deploying a fire-fighting helicopter”, said European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič on X. The EU is “monitoring the situation closely and [stands ready] to provide additional support to the authorities, if necessary”, he added. Some 285 firefighters, five aircraft and two helicopters were already on site on Monday 28 October, according to the Greek daily Kathimeriní. (FS)
