29/10/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 29 October, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, condemned via X the execution in Iran of German naturalised Iranian dissident Jamshid Sharmahd, described as a “scandal” by the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz. Following his abduction by the Iranian security services in Dubai in 2020, Mr Sharmahd was held in solitary confinement for months and sentenced to death for terrorism in 2023. “The EU strongly opposes the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances. It is a violation of the right to life and the ultimate denial of human dignity”, said Mr Borrell. He also shared the grief of the family and loved ones and expressed his solidarity with the German government. “The European Union is considering taking measures in response to this situation”, he concluded.
