UN Climate Change warns national climate action plans fall far short of what is needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C

29/10/24 (Agence Europe)On Monday 28 October, in the run-up to COP29 in Baku, UN Climate Change warned that countries’ current climate commitments, set out in national climate action plans, are not at all on track to limit global warming to 1.5°C. According to its new report (https://aeur.eu/f/e2g ), these commitments would actually only lead to a 2.6% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 compared to 2019, instead of the 43% recommended to meet the limit set by the Paris Agreement. National emission reduction targets, known as nationally determined contribution (NDCs), are due to be updated by early 2025. The current combined plans of the States would result in emissions of 51.5 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2030, representing a reduction of just 0.6% compared with the previous analysis, published by the UN at the end of 2023. (PLD)
