21/10/24 (Agence Europe) – On Saturday 19 October, the European Union condemned the murders of Elvino Dias, legal adviser to presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, and opposition politician Paulo Guambe. “In a democracy, there is no place for politically motivated killings”, stressed the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in a statement issued by the European External Action Service. The EU has called for an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to bring those responsible to justice. These murders come against a backdrop of post-election tensions in Mozambique, marked by worrying reports of violent dispersal of supporters following the elections held on Wednesday 9 October. An EU observation mission is in the country to assess the electoral process, which is still underway. (BD)
