21/10/24 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 21 October, the European Commission authorised €128 million in Swedish aid to help SSAB decarbonise its steel production. SSAB’s project involves moving from the current coal-based steel production process in Luleå to a system with virtually zero emissions. The measure will be made available through the (European) Just Transition Fund. The aid will take the form of a direct grant and will support the accelerated transition to an electric steel mill through the installation of an electric arc furnace, secondary metallurgy equipment and a caster. The electric arc furnace will operate using steel scrap and direct reduced iron produced from renewable hydrogen. The electric steel mill will have a capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of green slab per year. The new facility is scheduled to start producing green steel from 2029. (LC)
