Josep Borrell welcomes ‘reconciliation’ agreement between Palestinian factions

23/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 23 July, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, welcomed the reconciliation agreement signed the previous day in Beijing by fourteen Palestinian political players, including Fatah and Hamas. This agreement provides for joint governance in the Gaza Strip after the war. “This is important news. Palestinian unity is a good thing. We must support a process of unity between them”, he stressed at a conference organised by the ECFR on how the EU can support a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and a new Israeli-Palestinian political path. At the signing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on the international community to support the Palestinians so that they could “effectively control Gaza and the West Bank”. (CG)
