On Tuesday, 23 July, members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) elected MEP Lina Gálvez (S&D, Spanish)—the only woman running for chair of the committee—by acclamation.
She declared, “In these critical times when democracies are at risk, gender equality and women’s rights must stay at the core of EU values. We must get rid of the democratic deficit that results in women being murdered due to gender-based violence, in lower incomes, [in] fewer opportunities, [in] greater poverty, and [in] women being undervalued”.
MEPs also proceeded to elect four vice-chairs—these were elected by acclamation as well. The vice-chairs are Dainius Žalimas (Renew Europe, Lithuanian), Irene Montero (The Left, Spanish), Rosa Estaràs Ferragut (EPP, Spanish), and Predrag Fred Matić (S&D, Croatian).
Having 40 members, the parliamentary committee will hold its first meeting on 5 September.
The committee’s bureau will be in place for a period of two and a half years. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
