23/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the EU has decided to extend by one year the EU assistance measure taking the form of a general programme for support to the African Union (AU) under the ‘European Peace Facility’, until 31 December 2025. This measure for 2022-2024, amounting to €600 million (see EUROPE 12936/10), enables the financing of actions in support of the AU approved by the Political and Security Committee by 31 December 2024. According to the Council, the utilisation rate of the available funds is lower than initially forecast and the AU has expressed its interest in continuing to benefit from the measure, given the continuing needs. The Council “acknowledges the continued strategic importance of the Africa-EU Peace and Security Partnership and the leading role of the African Union in preserving peace and security on the African continent”.
