CONSTITUTIVE MEETINGS OF STANDING COMMITTEES OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT / Justice

Ilhan Kyuchyuk succeeds Adrián Vázquez Lázara as Chair of European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs

On Tuesday 23 July, the members of European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) elected their bureau for a two-and-a-half-year term. The only candidate, Ilhan Kyuchyuk (Renew Europe, Bulgarian), was appointed Chair of the committee by acclamation.

Mr Kyuchyuk, who succeeds Adrián Vázquez Lázara (EPP, Spanish), reminded the 25 MEPs of their “common mission” to “ensure” both “the justice” and “stability” of its framework, which they must “refine”. He expressed his desire to work constructively, drawing on the diverse perspectives and expertise of JURI’s members.

The committee’s members also elected four vice-chairs: Marion Walsmann (EPP, German) was elected first Vice-Chair by acclamation. Mario Mantovani (ECR, Italian) was elected second Vice-Chair with 13 votes in favour, 9 against and 2 abstentions. Lara Wolters (S&D, Dutch) was appointed third Vice-Chair with 13 votes in favour,

9 against and 2 abstentions against Juan Carlos Girauta Vidal (Patriots for Europe, Spanish), demonstrating that the ‘cordon sanitaire’ still holds. Finally, Emil Radev (EPP, Bulgarian) became the fourth Vice-Chair by acclamation.

The committee’s next meeting will be held on 5 September. (Original version in French by Nithya Paquiry)
