On Monday 8 July, at the end of a three-day visit to Djibouti, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, stressed the importance of cooperation between the EU and Djibouti in tackling the crises affecting the Horn of Africa.
“Djibouti is a very important partner for the EU, an essential partner in the region. Djibouti is pursuing a policy of conflict resolution, peace promotion and regional integration that is particularly remarkable in a strategic region with so many problems”, said Mr Borrell, following a meeting with the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh.
The High Representative spoke of the EU’s ambition to “remain a committed partner” in the country’s development and regional stability.
Following a visit to a desalination plant financed by the European Union, Mr Borrell said that the EU’s objective was to double the plant’s production capacity by 2028. In particular, he announced a new European supply of solar panels.
Mr Borrell also thanked Djibouti for its logistical support in the Red Sea (see other news) and its role as mediator in the ongoing conflict in Sudan (see EUROPE 13391/2). (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
