On Tuesday 25 June, the EU’s agricultural organisations and cooperatives (Copa-Cogeca) indicated their support for the conclusions of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council on the future of agriculture in the EU (see EUROPE 13439/18). The text was examined by the European agriculture ministers on Monday 24 June.
Copa-Cogeca supports the various analyses and proposals contained in the conclusions, “most of which are in line with our manifesto presented during the European elections”, explains the organisation (see EUROPE 13439/18). These proposals “must now be reflected in the 2024-2029 strategic agenda, which will be discussed by EU leaders on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 June in Brussels”.
Above all, Copa-Cogeca supports the precise analysis of the reasons for the agricultural protests, the need to reposition agriculture as a strategic pillar of the EU in the current geopolitical context, the importance of the CAP and the maintenance of an appropriate budget in line with its objectives. Copa-Cogeca reiterates its wish to see the appointment of a European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Areas who is also a Vice-President of the European Commission.
