S&D Group in European Parliament elects nine Vice Presidents

On Wednesday 26 June, the S&D group in the European Parliament elected nine Vice Presidents and a treasurer: the previous day it had re-elected the Spaniard Iratxe Garcia Perez to the role of President for at least 2.5 years.

According to Italian MEP Brando Benifei, the Italian S&D faction, which sent 21 MEPs after 9 June, could claim the second part of the group presidency or even the presidency of the European Parliament, as he indicated on X.

The (Italian) Democratic Party “will lead the European Parliament or our group in the second half of the legislature: we shall all be united, together with the other progressive and pro-European forces, working towards a just, sustainable and united Europe, for peace and to defeat nationalism”, he wrote, while welcoming the election of his Spanish counterpart.

The nine Vice Presidents elected on Wednesday morning are as follows: Mohammed Chahim (Dutch), Camilla Laureti (Italian), Christophe Clergeau (French), Gabriele Bischoff (German), Ana Catarina Mendes (Portuguese), Kathleen Van Brempt (Belgian), Ioannis Maniatis (Greek), Hélène Fritzon (Swedish) and Alex Agius Saliba (Polish). Finland’s Eero Heinäluoma was elected Treasurer. According to the group, these appointments are fully in line with its values: pro-European and gender-balanced.
