In a joint letter published on 29 May, more than 50 companies and associations asked the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council to ensure the final adoption of the Nature Restoration Law, which has been blocked since Hungary reversed its position in March (see EUROPE 13378/1).
This request comes just days after a joint letter from 11 Member States, who also want the text to reach a final agreement at the EU ‘Environment’ Council on 17 June (see EUROPE 13409/11).
“More than 50% of the global economy or global GDP is highly or moderately dependent on nature. We, businesses, need the natural resources and ecosystem services that are now under threat from biodiversity loss and climate change”, write the signatories.
Furthermore, they indicate that climate inaction will lead to costly disruptions in supply chains, lower productivity and higher operational costs.
These companies and associations claim that the Nature Restoration Law represents “a generation’s opportunity to take concrete and effective action to reverse the biodiversity and climate crises”.
They are therefore calling on the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council to ensure an “urgent” adoption of the European Nature Restoration Law, “as agreed upon by the co-legislators in November 2023 and adopted by the European Parliament in February 2024”.
