On Thursday 2 May, NATO countries emphasised their deep concern about the recent “malign activities” carried out on Allied territory and Russia’s hybrid activities, “which constitute a threat to Allied security”.
“We condemn Russia’s behaviour and we call on Russia to uphold its international obligations, as Allies do theirs. Russia’s actions will not deter Allies from continuing to support Ukraine”, they warned in a joint statement.
Several people have recently been charged for their role in hostile state activities affecting Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom.
According to the Allies, these recent incidents are part of the intensification of Russian activities throughout the Euro-Atlantic area, particularly on Alliance territory and through proxies. These include acts of sabotage and violence, cyberspace activities, electronic disruption, disinformation campaigns and other hybrid operations, they say.
NATO countries have pledged their support in solidarity with the Allies affected by these malicious activities. “We will act individually and collectively to address these actions, and we will continue to coordinate closely”, they warned. The Allies made clear that they would continue to improve their resilience, strengthen the tools they already use to counter and denounce Russian hybrid activities and ensure that the Alliance and the Allies are prepared to deter and defend against hybrid activities or attacks.
