EU and NATO condemn Russia’s recent cyberattacks against European states

In a press release published on Friday, 3 May, the European Union has expressed that it is worried about Russian actors’ recent repeated cyberattacks against Member States.

On Friday, Germany accused Russian hackers of targeting several members of the Social Democratic Party in the government coalition as well as certain national companies. At the same time, the Czech Republic also announced that its institutions had been targeted by these same Russian hackers.

Public entities, agencies, and institutions in several other Member States—including Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Sweden—had previously been targeted.

Expressing its concern at the resurgence of these practices on the eve of the European elections, the EU declared in its press release, “The malicious cyber campaign shows Russia’s continuous pattern of irresponsible behaviour in cyberspace, by targeting democratic institutions, government entities and critical infrastructure providers across the European Union and beyond”.

As for NATO, it has also reacted to the German revelations, saying that it “stand[s] in solidarity” with the Member States that were targeted.

We are determined to employ the necessary capabilities in order to deter, defend against and counter the full spectrum of cyber threats to support each other, including by considering coordinated responses”, declared the North Atlantic Alliance. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
