On Wednesday 27 March, Eurelectric, the association representing the European electricity industry, published a policy paper on the electrification of the EU to guide European decision-makers and encourage them to do more to achieve an electrification rate of around 50 or even 70% by 2050 in order to achieve climate neutrality.
Above all, it calls for governance to be strengthened with a European action plan for electrification, which should be published “within the first 100 days of the coming mandate”.
According to Eurelectric, this plan should set an indicative target of 35% electrification of overall energy consumption in the EU by 2030, but should also introduce an electrification indicator in the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) to monitor progress.
The association is also calling for continued efforts to relieve electricity prices of taxes and levies, to raise awareness of the positive impact of large-scale electrification on reducing electricity costs and security of supply, and to invest urgently in modernising the electricity grid.
