13/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – By adopting the report by João Pimenta Lopes (The Left, Portuguese) on the protocol on the implementation of the fisheries partnership agreement between the EU and Kiribati on Tuesday 12 December in Strasbourg, the European Parliament approved the conclusion of this six-year fisheries agreement (see EUROPE 13303/37). The protocol allows EU vessels to fish for tuna in Kiribati’s waters and provides fishing opportunities for four tuna seiners, with access to Kiribati’s waters for 160 days a year (additional days can be made available each year to vessels from EU Member States on request). The Union’s annual financial contribution is €760,000. The EU Council has yet to formally adopt this protocol. (LC)
