EU Council approves Commission’s strategy for tackling consequences of demographic ageing

On Tuesday 12 December, the European Affairs ministers of the EU27 adopted conclusions on the management of demographic change in Europe, following on from the Commission’s 11 October communication on the subject (see EUROPE 13269/4), which advocated increasing female employment, extending careers and encouraging legal migration. The EU Council welcomes the toolbox presented and the intention to implement it “mainstreaming demographic concerns in relevant policy proposals at EU level and their accompanying impact assessments”, “reinforcing analysis on key themes and challenges posed by demographic change”, “encouraging regular dialogues and exchanges with Member States” and by ensuring that no EU citizen or region is left behind. The Council also considers it necessary to take account of demographic change and its impact on competitiveness, human capital and equality. Link to conclusions: https://aeur.eu/f/a3d (SP)
