On Tuesday 12 December, the Council of the European Union appointed Finland’s Petri Sarvamaa as a member of the European Court of Auditors. The current Belgian member, Annemie Turtelboom, has also been reappointed for another term. At the same time, the European Parliament voted in favour of the appointments of Hans Lindblad and João Leão.
Mr Sarvamaa (EPP), who has been an MEP since 2012, has been an active member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT). He will join the Court of Auditors from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2030, replacing Hannu Takkula, sitting in Chamber III and responsible for auditing EU finances in the fields of external action, security and justice.
The former Belgian Federal Minister for Justice, Annemie Turtelboom, who has been Dean of the Court’s Administrative Committee since May 2018, has had her role extended until 30 April 2030.
European Parliament. At the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, MEPs adopted the report by Angelika Winzig (EPP, Austrian), proposing the appointment of Swedish economist Hans Lindblad as a member of the Court, with 498 votes in favour, 15 against and 74 abstentions.
The report by Mikuláš Peksa (Greens/EFA, Czech), proposing the appointment to the Court of former Portuguese finance minister João Leão, was also adopted, with 328 votes in favour, 67 against and 198 abstentions. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
