European Commission provides Jordan with a macro-financial assistance tranche of €200 million

The European Commission disbursed, on Wednesday 3 May, a third and final tranche of assistance to Jordan amounting to €200 million under the European macro-financial assistance.

The ‘Macro-Financial Assistance Programme III’ in favour of Jordan amounts to €500 million.

Additional assistance of €200 million comes from a €3 billion package adopted in May 2020 to help ten enlargement and neighbourhood countries cope with the economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic (see EUROPE 12394/30)

The Commission had provided Jordan with two initial tranches of assistance of €250 million each in November 2020 and July 2021 respectively (see EUROPE 12609/35).

Macro-financial assistance, granted in the form of soft loans, is a mechanism to support Jordan’s balance of payments and economic stability, which has been particularly affected by the consequences of the various conflicts in the region.

This assistance also aims to improve the sustainability of the country’s public debt.

The disbursement of the these tranches is conditional on the implementation of an economic and political reform programme. The Commission found that Jordan had “largely fulfilled the agreed political conditions”. (Original version in French by Émilie Vanderhulst)
