25/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 25 April, the EU Council adopted new legislation to improve stability requirements for ferries, including ‘ro-ro’ (roll-on/roll-off) passenger ships. This revised Directive ensures consistency with the international standards for the stability of damaged passenger ships, recently updated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) under its 2020 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention). The European Parliament approved the agreement during the March plenary (see EUROPE 13112/35). Once published in the Official Journal of the EU, the Directive will have to be transposed by the Member States within 18 months. To read the directive: https://aeur.eu/f/6jc (AD)
