25/04/23 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 25 April, the EU Council adopted the revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), including in the aviation sector, and its extension to maritime transport. The new rules increase the overall ambition for emission reductions by 2030 in the sectors covered by the ‘ETS’ to 62%, compared to 2005 levels. Emissions from maritime transport will be included in the scope of the ETS for the first time. The obligation for shipping companies to surrender allowances will be introduced gradually: 40% for verified emissions from 2024, 70% from 2025, and 100% from 2026. Free emission allowances for the aviation sector will be phased out and full auctioning will be introduced from 2026. (NP)
