25/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 25 April, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell welcomed, via his Twitter account, the announcement of a 72-hour ceasefire throughout Sudan—an announcement made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at midnight the previous day. Mr Borrell also added, “We urge both sides to fully uphold it.” This was also an opportunity for him to reiterate the EU’s position. “[The aim] of our collective efforts remain[s] a permanent cessation of hostilities and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to protect civilians,” stressed Mr Borrell. The 72-hour truce had been announced a few hours after a meeting of European foreign ministers, who had expressed their deep concern for the civilian populations who are victims of the deadly fighting between Sudan’s regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (see EUROPE 13168/1).
