European Commission consults public to assess effectiveness of Ship Recycling Regulation

On Wednesday 15 March, the European Commission launched a second public consultation to assess the effectiveness, relevance and added value of Regulation (EU) 1257/2013 on ship recycling.

This regulation aims to prevent, limit and eliminate adverse effects on human health and the environment arising from the recycling, operation and maintenance of EU-flagged ships.

All interested parties – shipowners, recyclers, industry, national authorities, NGOs and citizens – are invited to contribute online.

One of the aims of the current evaluation exercise is to establish the extent to which the Regulation has been implemented and to assess its impact to date. It is also an opportunity to assess the extent to which the Regulation contributes to the overall policy objectives of the ‘European Green Deal’ and the second EU Circular Economy Action Plan, presented by the Commission in March 2020 (see EUROPE 12444/1).

The evaluation will also identify shortcomings in the implementation of the Regulation and determine whether it should be revised.

An initial call for contributions was launched in June 2022 (see EUROPE 12965/23). This public consultation will be open until midnight Brussels time on 7 June.
