The names of the 30 MEPs on the European Parliament’s new Subcommittee on Public Health (see EUROPE 13102/19) were announced on Wednesday 15 March at the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg.
The 30 MEPs were appointed, in accordance with Rule 209 of the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, from among the members of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), to which the new subcommittee will be linked and which it will assist.
The proposal for a decision to set up this subcommittee and the subcommittee’s mandate were adopted at a previous plenary session on 14 February (see EUROPE 13121/16).
According to its mandate, the new subcommittee “shall be responsible for public health matters, and particularly the programmes and specific actions in the field of public health, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, health aspects of bioterrorism, the European Medicines Agency and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control”.
The subcommittee will have no legislative powers and will report to the ENVI Committee. The ENVI Committee therefore retains the competence to examine legislative proposals and votes will take place in the ENVI Committee.
