14/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – As the European economy may not shrink in 2023 (see EUROPE 13120/1), on Monday 13 February, Eurogroup president Paschal Donohoe called on euro area countries to review national measures to support households and businesses most affected by soaring energy prices exacerbated by Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, matching them with the gradual decline in inflation expected this year. “We need to look at having in place a level of budgetary support that reflects the changes that we expect to happen with regard to the price of energy and the general level of inflation. This is important in order to reduce the overall budgetary cost and to achieve an appropriate budget position while protecting the most vulnerable and maintaining incentives for the green transition”, he said after the Eurogroup meeting.
