The European Parliament, on Wednesday 18 January, encouraged the European Union to make a “continued ambitious commitment to make the protection of human rights a central part of all EU policies” and to strengthen the coherence between its internal and external policies in this field.
Very concerned about the “serious violations to human rights and democracy in the world”, MEPs, in adopting the report by Isabel Wiseler Lima (EPP, Luxembourgian) by 438 votes to 75 with 121 abstentions, say that the EU and its Member States need to step up their efforts worldwide in support of democracy and human rights and to act together, especially in multinational fora.
Parliament reiterates its call for the introduction of qualified majority voting for EU Council decisions and the implementation of sanctions under the EU’s global human rights sanctions regime.
MEPs want the EU and Member States to develop a high-level strategic vision to counter the growing global attacks on human rights defenders. Parliament also believes that the fight against corruption should be integrated into the Union’s actions and policies to promote human rights and democracy.
MEPs also call for human rights dialogues with third countries to be conducted with a view to achieving results and the inclusion of robust human rights clauses in agreements between the EU and third countries, and procedures in case of violations.
