Roadworthiness package—European Commission consults in order to adapt vehicle inspection modes

06/07/2022 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday, 6 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on the revision of the roadworthiness package. As vehicles are increasingly technically complex and safety and emissions rules have become more strict, the European Commission believes that new enhanced roadworthiness testing provisions are needed “as soon as possible”. The methods of inspecting vehicles reportedly need to be based on “new approaches”, and visual and mechanical vehicle inspections reportedly “progressively need to be complemented or even replaced by inspection modes that access vehicle status and operational data”, the European Commission explains. Revising the roadworthiness package would enable vehicle performance levels to be maintained and, among other things, would enable Member States to successfully overcome the difficulties they have encountered in accessing vehicle register data, notably when the vehicle is registered in another Member State.
